Civilization and Its Discontents by Sigmund Freud

A seminal work in the fields of psychology and philosophy, Civilization and Its Discontents explores the inherent tensions between individual instincts and societal norms. It examines the psychological underpinnings of civilization, arguing that the development of society necessitates the repression of basic human desires. Freud posits that while civilization offers security and communal structure, it simultaneously leads to feelings of discontent and unease in individuals. He delves into the conflict between the pleasure principle and the reality principle, highlighting the struggle between our primal urges and the demands of social order. Through a blend of psychoanalytic theory and philosophical inquiry, he articulates the complexities of human nature and the costs of societal progress. First published in 1930, this influential work remains a crucial reference for understanding the dynamics of culture, individuality, and the psychological challenges faced in modern life.
